Short for “intravenous”, meaning “in the vein”. These typically refer to medications that are injected directly into the bloodstream. When referring to IV insulin, this is insulin that is injected directly into the bloodstream and has immediate effects. This is typically only used in emergency settings. All other times, insulin is injected into an area under the skin (subcutaneously) where it is can be absorbed more slowly.
