Commonly refers to nerve damage resulting in numbness, tingling, and/or pain which usually starts in the toes and moves up the legs and hands. However, the nerves that supply the gut, heart, and sexual organs can also be affected (See “Autonomic neuropathy”). This neuropathy typically occurs after years of poorly controlled diabetes.
