A type of diabetes mellitus resulting from the autoimmune destruction of the pancreas which leads to complete dependence on insulin injections. This was formerly called “juvenile diabetes” as it typically develops in children but it can also occur in adults. Type 1 diabetes is much less common than type 2 diabetes (~5% of persons with diabetes).
